A joint house committee of Karnataka State Legislature has recommended that women employees of Information Technology and Bio-technology companies (IT/BT) in Bengaluru and other cities should not be put on night shifts.

In its 32nd report, the committee headed by NA Harris, that tabled a report in the Legislative Assembly, recommended hiring men for night shifts.

The 21-member committee had in November inspected Infosys and Biocon to assess the working condition of women employees. It observed that companies need to make efforts to put women employees in morning or afternoon shifts.

Reacting to this, Nasscomm said that the report denies women an opportunity to work, and added that steps towards women safety has been taken.

Nasscomm also said that the government has to ensure security of women in all cities where IT companies operate. Further, it also said that if the IT industry has to create more opportunities for women in the sector, then night shifts are unavoidable.
