HUBBALLI: Jagatika Lingayat Mahasabha president Basavaraj Horatti has trashed the appeal of Mathe Mahadevi, head of Basava Dharma Peetha of Koodalasangam, to vote for Congress in the state assembly polls.

Horatti said it was not the decision of the seers who met in Bengaluru on Saturday, but the personal opinion of Mathe Mahadevei, the first Lingayat female seer.

He said their movement demanding separate religion status to Lingayats was an apolitical one. “After I came to know about the controversial remark by Mathe Mahadevi, I collected information on the same. All the seers who participated in the meeting have decided to support the party,” he said, adding that she might have said so out of turn.

He said: “What Mathe Mahadevi has said is not right. We have criticised BJP president Amit Shah for his statement in Shivayogi Mandir and then how can we support such a remark by Mathe Mahadevi. The movement got huge public support only because it was apolitical and it was not for or against of any party.”
