Karnataka High Court Judge, Justice Bopanna named Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court

The President of India has appointed Justice Ajjikuttira Somaiah Bopanna to the post with effect from the date he assumes charge of the office.

BENGALURU: Karnataka High Court Judge, Justice AS Bopanna, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court. The President of India has appointed Justice Ajjikuttira Somaiah Bopanna to the post with effect from the date he assumes charge of the office.

A notification dated October 24, 2018 was issued by Rajinder Kashyap, Joint Secretary of the Government of India, with regard to the appointment.A farewell address to Justice Bopanna will be made by Chairman of Karnataka State Bar Council at the High Court on Friday.

The Supreme Court Collegium had recently recommended the elevation of Justice Bopanna as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court to the Centre. According to the resolution of the collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Bopanna was unanimously found suitable in all aspects for being appointed to the post, following which the union government went ahead with the appointment.

Born on May 20, 1959, Justice Bopanna enrolled as an advocate in 1984 and practised civil, Constitutional, company, service and labour matters in the High Court as well as in the Civil and Labour Courts. He worked as a legal advisor to all central public sector undertakings and as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel from 1999 to 2005. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Karnataka on January 6, 2006, and permanent judge on March 1, 2007.
