THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Islamic religious scholars have taken exception to PDP leader Abdul Nassar Madhani’s remarks that the green flag used by Muslim organisations in the State resembled Pakistan’s national flag and that the Partition was spurred by Muslim demand.

In a joint statement, eight religious scholars have accused Madhani of wounding Muslim sentiments and strengthening "Sangh Parivar fascist" propaganda through remarks made at a face-to-face programme in here on Saturday. They condemned Madhani’s arguments as "deeply unfortunate and a rejection of historical facts." Muslims in India and a number of organisations in Kerala such as the South Kerala Jam’Iyathul Ulama use green flags. Also, the flags of political organisations such as the Indian National League, Janata Dal are green in colour. “Madhani is also well aware that green flags are used in Sufi Maqbaras and other public functions of the Muslim community."
