Express News Service

Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan's son V A Arun Kumar was questioned by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) in connection with a preliminary inquiry into the alleged irregularities in his promotion as IHRD additional director. ''Arun Kumar was cooperative.

He had produced all documents in support of his qualifications and experience,'' Vigilance Special investigation Unit II SP E Sharafudeen said.

The interrogation that began on Monday afternoon continued for six hours. The Vigilance team also took his statement in connection with the case. The allegations against Arun Kumar were raised by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy when he was the Leader of the Opposition.

The then LDF Government led by Achuthanandan had entrusted the inquiry to the Lok Ayukta. Later, the case was withdrawn from the Lok Ayukta by the Chandy Government which, in turn, ordered a Vigilance inquiry. The charges against him included his promotion in IHRD and foreign trips he had undertaken while serving as Managing Director of the Kerala State Cooperative Coir Marketing Federation Ltd.
