Argentinian Film Refugiado Bags Suvarna Chakoram

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Argentenian film ‘Refugiado’, directed by Diego Lerman, won the Suvarna Chakoram (Golden Crow Pheasant) award at the 19th edition of International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) here which concluded on Friday.

The movie tells the story of a seven-year-old boy and his mother interred in a shelter for abused women, where they spend two days. The award carries a purse of `15 lakh and a citation.

None behind the movie was present at the Nishagandhi auditorium to receive the award declared by an international jury comprising film makers and festival programmers Xie Fei (chairman), Laurence Kardish, Klaus Eder, Reis Celik and Sumitra Bhave.

Hiroshi Toda won the Rajatha Chakoram (Silver Crow Pheasant) award for the best director for his film Summer, Kyoto (Kyoto, Natsu). The award, comprising a cash prize of `4 lakh, certificate and memento, was presented by Governor P Sathasivam. The film also received the NETPAC award for Best Asian Film.

Rajatha Chakoram for the best debutant director was bagged by Hossein Shahabi for The Bright Day. The award carries a cash prize of `3 lakh.

Sanalkumar Sashidharan’s Oraalpokkam bagged both FIPRESCI and NETPAC awards for the best Malayalam film.

Oblivion Season directed by Iranian director Abbas Rafei received a NETPAC special mention. The award was decided by a jury comprising Sunny Joseph, Roya Sadat and Italo Spinelli.

IFFK Awards Declared

FIPRESCI award for best international film was awarded to ‘They are the Dogs’ directed by Hicham Lasri.   Sajin Babu’s ‘Unto the Dusk’ (Asthamayam Vare) bagged the audience poll award, which carries a purse of `2 lakh.

 Four movies -- ‘Unto the dusk’ by Sajin Babu, ‘Zahir’ by Sidhartha Siva, ‘C R No 89’ by Sudevan and ‘Kanyaka Talkies’ by K R Manoj --  received certificates of merit from the marketing section. The merit certificates carries a cash prize of `3 lakh.
