G Sankara Kurup Award Conferred on ONV

KAKKANAD: “When a poet becomes the personification of a culture he is said to have earned something for the society,” said poet and lyricist O N V Kurup.

He was speaking after receiving the award instituted by the Thrikkakara Samskarika Kendram in the name of G Sankara Kurup, at the panchayat hall here on Sunday.

“The award came as a surprise to me as I am the first person to receive the award that is in the name of the great poet,” ONV said.

The Thrikkakara Samskarika Kendram, a meeting point for art and literature enthusiasts, selected the ace poet in recognition of his contributions to Malayalam literature and poetry. Winners of the State film awards, who reside in Thrikkakara, were honoured on the occasion.

Best actor award winner Lal, best lyricist Madhu Vasudev, best make-up artist Pattanam Rasheed and jury special award winner Afsal Yousuf were honoured at the function. District panchayat president Eldhose Kunnappilly was also honoured on the occasion.

The event also witnessed some dramatic moments when ONV donated the prize money for the upcoming park in memory of G Sankara Kurup, near the Goshree bridge.

The construction of the park will begin after securing sanction from the taluk office.

The meeting was inaugurated by Trikkakara MLA Benny Behnan. M K Sanu, M Leelavathy, Kalady Sree Sankaracharya University vice-chancellor M C Dileep Kumar, Deputy Mayor B Bhadra, Justice C N Ramachandran Nair, Environmentalist C R Neelakandan, Municipalitychairman Shaji Vazhakkala, Chemmanam Chacko and Thrikkakara Samskarika Kendarm president Paul Macheril also attended the meeting.
