P V Thampy award for tribal activist Geetha Vazhachal

KOCHI: The 19th P V Thampy Memorial Endowment Award for Environmental Protection, constituted in remembrance of journalist and environmentalist P V Thampy, will be presented to Geetha Vazhachal.  

Geetha, chief of the Kadar community in Vazhachal, is the first woman to lead the tribal community.

The popular agitation against the Athirappilly Hydro Electric Project was led by Geetha, highlighting the the potential environmental impact of the project.
She has been in the forefront of various campaigns to protect tribesmen, the forest where they live,  and the Chalakkudy river.

The award, comprising a cash prize of `25,000 and memento, will be presented at function to be held at the conference hall of the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Kadavanthra,  at 5 pm on November 9.

The award will be presented by novelist K R Meera.   Kochi Mayor Soumini Jain and V D Satheesan MLA will speak at the function.

P V Thampy Memorial Endowment Award was constituted 18 years ago to honour ordinary people who make contributions in environmental protection through extraordinary works.
