Heavy rains lash across Kerala, Neyyar Dam shutters open up

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Heavy rains have been lashing across Kerala since Monday. In view of the rains, four shutters of Neyyar Dam were opened up to 3 ft.

Shutters of Aruvikkara and Peppara dams were also opened. Precautionary warnings have been issued to people living near the reservoir and Neyyar river.

Thiruvananthapuram District Collector has declared a holiday for all educational institutions except Professional colleges.

A widespread agricultural loss has been reported from the high range areas of Thiruvananthapuram district. Georgekutty, 74 of Nalanchira died on Tuesday morning when he accidentally stamped an electric line.

Fishermen have been asked not to venture out into the sea. Coastal roads got damaged due to sea erosion at Eravipuram in Kollam.

Heavy rains have been continuing in Alappuzha, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Kozhikode and Kannur districts also. The MET department has warned that heavy rains will continue till Wednesday.

Orange Alert

The situation in Idukki continues to be critical with the water level at Idukki reservoir touching 2395.38 ft. Orange alert was declared on Monday. The State Disaster Management Authority has issued necessary directives to be followed if the shutters are opened.
