KOCHI: Syro-Malabar Church Major Archbishop Cardinal George Alencherry has come out strongly against the destruction of churches and other Christian institutions by mobs perpetrating violence in Manipur. His statement comes in the wake of the large-scale violence in Manipur where around 25 churches besides schools, houses, vehicles and public properties were set ablaze by rioters.

Taking note of the situation, the cardinal said, “Destruction of churches and Christian religious institutions by rioters in Manipur can in no way be justified,” he said. He said his prayers are with the thousands of victims of violence and those who have lost their lives.

“I offer prayers for the departed souls to attain eternal peace and quick recovery for the injured,” he said. He urged the Manipur government to take steps on a war footing to end violence and bring peace. The major archbishop also urged the state government to take strict legal action against those who are perpetrating violence.
