MALAPPURAM: Having given investigators the slip for over a decade using forged documents and false identities, a Malappuram man accused of murdering is wife and two children has been arrested from Bengaluru. Mohammed Sharif, 46, belonging to Vavoor in Cheekkode panchayat, had escaped in 2015 after receiving bail in the case relating to the murders that happened in 2013.

Despite a prolonged absence of credible leads, police had continued their investigation with assistance from cyber cell units and technical experts. Recent intelligence revealed that Sharif had been living in Bengaluru under the alias Mohammed Yusuf Sharif, working as a taxi driver, and had reportedly remarried.

Acting on instructions from Kondotty ASP Karthik Balakumar, a DANSAF team reached Bengaluru and confirmed that Sharif had married a woman from Kolkata. Sharif introduced her as Sabira — the same name as his deceased wife. Police also found that he possessed a driving licence, Aadhaar card, and PAN card registered under fabricated addresses.

Sharif, after fleeing Kerala, had moved across several cities including Mangaluru, Mysuru, Mumbai, and Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal. During that period, he worked in the construction sector and as a food delivery agent before eventually purchasing a taxi registered in his second wife’s name. He, reportedly, drove primarily at night, avoided public interaction during the day.
