BHUBANESWAR: Noted freedom fighter and educationist Sarbeswar Dash passed away here today. He was 84.

Dash was ailing for sometime, family members said. He is survived by two sons. Dash’s wife Basanta Kumari Devi, a poet and writer, had died in 1999.

Born in Puri district’s Sriramchandrapur, Dash received his MA in English from Ravenshaw College before getting a PhD from the US. He went on to teach English at many universities and colleges.

He was very popular among students during his tenure as a professor in Ravenshaw College.

While in school, he had pulled down the British Flag and fled to Kolkata.

Later, Dash went on to actively participate in several Gandhian movements. A staunch follower of Mahatma Gandhi, he stuck to Khadi, dhoti and kurta till his death.

Dash was conferred many awards in recognition of his writing. He authored at least 25 books and his biography was published recently.
