State’s first Bamboo Setum comes alive

BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday inaugurated a Bamboo Setum, first of its kind in the State, located in the Medicinal Plants Knowledge Centre on the outskirts of City.

BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday inaugurated a Bamboo Setum, first of its kind in the State, located in the Medicinal Plants Knowledge Centre on the outskirts of City.

Spread over a five-acre patch, the master park boasts of 50 species of bamboo in the landscaped park. At least 118 different species of bamboos are recorded in India.

The Bamboo Setum, established by the Forest Department, will provide recreational value apart from acting as a research centre in the future.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests SC Mohanty said bamboos, which are known to be one of the fastest growing species, have tremendous medicinal

value.

At least 1,500 different applications of bamboo have been documented. Also the State Government has been promoting bamboo plantation given their significance in carbon sequestration.

 The Medicinal Plants Knowledge Centre, which has 300 species and whose taxonomic and ayurvedic data are being digitally documented, is located near Patrapada.
