BERHAMPUR: Barely two months after a teenaged girl was allegedly gang-raped near a river under Bhanjanagar police limits in Ganjam district on way home after attending an Independence Day programme, police arrested six youths in yet another case of alleged gang-rape on Tuesday.

A young girl was raped by six bike-borne youths, identified as Raghab Bisoi of Gangapur village, Samir Kumar Gouda and Rakesh Kumar Barad of Sanasadara village and Shishira Nayak, Pabitra Sethi and Sibaram Nayak of Khyatribarapur village, in front of her fiancé.

After launching a manhunt, police nabbed the accused and forwarded them to Bhanjanagar court. Meanwhile, the victim and the accused were sent to MKCH MCH for medical examination.
The family members of the victim had fixed her marriage to her fiancé, hailing from Balisira village under Gangapur police limits, after participating in a ritualistic ceremony on Monday.  Later, the couple visited the nearby Budhakendu temple inside the forest to offer prayers to the deity there. As they were preparing to worship the deity, the accused reached the temple on motorcycles.

They assaulted the girl’s fiance. Thereafter, they dragged the girl to the forest and allegedly raped her. As the accused fled from the spot, the victim and her fiancé managed to reach the main road of the village and informed the villagers about the crime.

The victim lodged a complaint with the police. The villagers  staged a sit-in protest in front of Gangapur police station, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits. On receiving information, Bhanjanagar SDPO, Utkal Kesari Das, reached the spot and launched a manhunt for the accused.
