BHUBANESWAR:  A park in the city, which is usually a destination of pleasure, turned a spot of extreme step for a man who committed suicide in front of his female friend on Monday evening. According to the police, Shashikant Panda of Balasore, working in a private bank in Baramunda, had gone to Jaydev Vatika under Khandagiri police limits with his female friend Surjyasmita Tripathy of Angul.

They reportedly had a fight and Surjyasmita went away. Shashikant told Surjyasmita that if she did not come back, he will commit suicide. As Surjyasmita did not relent, Shashikant took her stole and hanged himself from a tree. On receiving the information, police rushed to the spot and detained the woman. Later, she was handed over to Mahila police station. “According to Surjyasmita, she was in a relationship with Shashikant for the last one year,” Khandagiri police station inspector-incharge Himanshu Bhusan Swain said. Surjyasmita was working as a security guard in the same bank where Shashikant was employed and the duo had entered into a relationship. However, no complaint has been filed by the deceased’s family, Swain said.

Woman attempts suicide before CM’s grievance cell

A woman attempted to commit suicide in front of Chief Minister’s Grievance Cell here alleging police inaction on a complaint filed by her against her landlord. The woman, Rajanirani Dash of Nanapada village under Nirakarpur police limits, tried to hang herself from a tree but was rescued by police. According to Capital police station in-charge ACP Manas Garnaik, Rajanirani alleged that she and her daughter were forced to vacate a rented house of Bijaybaliar Singh. But investigation revealed that she had not paid the house rent for three months. However, Rajanirani claimed that she had lodged a complaint against the landlord at Nirakarpur police station, but no action was taken. Khurda SP Dipti Ranjan Ray said a case was registered in February and a notice was also issued to her landlord for appearing before the police.
