CHENNAI: Speakers recalled the contribution of Father Constantine Joseph Beschi, popularly known as Veeramamunivar, to Tamil at a function to mark his 328th birth anniversary on Saturday.

Paying floral tributes to Veeramamunivar’s statue at the Marina Beach, Finance Minister K Anbazhagan said the Italian Jesuit priest, who came to India in 1711 for missionary work, immersed himself in the life, language and culture of the Tamils. He mastered the Tamil language and in 36 years produced eminent literary works.
