CHENNAI: This Deepavali, it will be different kind of fireworks in cinema halls, the fight to lure viewers will not be just between tinsel town’s two young heroes, Suriya and Vijay, whose films are hitting the screens that day, but also between the producers of the movies, Udhayanidhi Stalin and his elder cousin Kalanidhi Maran.

Traditionally, a chosen day for film launches during heyday of Kollywood, Deepavali, of late, has not been bringing much cheer to movie buffs. But this year, on October 17, Aadhavan, featuring Suriya and produced by Red Giant Movies’ of Udhayanidhi Stalin, and Vettaikaaran, brought out by Maran’s Sun Pictures, with Vijay in the lead, are said to be surefire releases.

Aadhavan, with Suriya riding high after Ayan, has raised great expectations mainly because he has teamed up with Nayanthara, an actress with a considerable fan following in the State, while Vettaikaaran is keenly awaited by the fans of the Ilayathalapathi, whose last four films in a row have been average grossers. The distribution rights of the film, originally produced by AVM, were acquired by Sun Pictures recently.

With the screening pattern going for a change — like continous shows in various screens in multiplexes and theatres with distributors out to make as much collection as possible on the opening day itself — it has been quite some time when two big budget films were released on the same day.

If both films are released on the same day, that will add to Deepavali festivities. Of course, comparisons between the two films will be drawn, depending on the number of days the films run in theatres and the crowds they manage to draw.
