CHENNAI: Political parties as well as Tamil and cultural forums observed the first death anniversary of K Muthukumar here on Friday and paid rich tributes.

He was a journalist who immolated himself last January 29 during the war between the Lankan army and the LTTE, urging action to save Eelam Tamils.

MDMK, Vidhuthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, PMK, the Sri Lankan Tamil Protection Movement and a host of other Tamil forums, including the Tamilar Eluchi Iyakkam, organised programmes to honour Muthukumar.

Tamil litterateur Tamizharuvi Manian spoke at a programme at the Press Club.

Earlier in the day, a 19-foot martyrs’ stupa, made of flowers and garlands was erected in front of Muthukumar’s house in Kumaran Nagar at Kolathur here.

‘RENAME HADDOWS ROAD’: The Tamilar Eluchi Iyakkam (TEI) organised a demonstration near Shastri Bhavan asking Haddows Road to be renamed as Muthukumar Salai.
