VELLORE: A pawn shop at Vinnamangalam village near Ambur was broken into and jewels worth Rs 75 lakh have been reportedly looted.

Sathaymoorthy, who runs the pawn shop, had closed the shop on Sunday night. The incident came to light on Monday morning when employees of a shoe unit which functions behind the pawn shop reported for work and found that the back door of the unit had been forced open. It was later found that miscreants had gained access to the pawn shop through this door and had made a big hole in the back wall of the pawn shop.

Sathyamoorthy later discovered that more than five locks which had been installed to safeguard the jewels had been broken open and gold jewels worth about Rs 70 lakh and silver  worth about Rs 5 lakh had been looted from the shop. The weight of the missing jewellery is being calculated.

Ambur DSP, ASP and Ambur taluk police inspector (incharge) rushed to the spot. Fingerprint experts and a sniffer dog were also brought to the spot. Three special teams have been formed to nab the culprits.

Poclain, lorry, two tractors seized

A poclain, lorry and three tractors were seized near Kaveripakkam during a vehicle check, on Sunday. The vehicles were found carrying mud for brick kilns, without required permission. They were immediately seized and handed over to the Kaveripakkam police.
