A 10-month-old baby succumbed at a private hospital in Salem on Saturday three days after it was poisoned by its mother, who also consumed poison and is battling for her life, police said.
The baby, M Kanishka, was poisoned by its mother M Vijaya (22), a resident of Eswaramoorthipalayam near Rasipuram on Wednesday. Later she too consumed poison due to distress over a petty quarrel she had with her husband Mani alias Allimuthu on Tuesday.
Both the baby and mother were rushed to the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital, Salem. Then they were shifted to a private hospital where the baby succumbed on Saturday, sources said.
The Mangalapuram police have registered a case and are investigating.
