Mom Poisons Toddler, Kills Self in Salem

Express News Service

SALEM: Depressed over her husband having quit work, a 34-year-old woman poisoned her four-month-old daughter to death, before committing suicide, here on Friday.

According to the Omalur police, Sivaji (36), a resident of Indira Nagar near Omalur, was a casual labourer. A few months ago, he was diagnosed with Tuberculosis, following which he stopped working. As he was the sole earner in the family, his wife Chitra (34) used to fight with him over his decision not to work. The couple had two children - a 14-year-old boy Prabhakaran and a four-month-old girl.

On Friday, while Sivaji was away at his friend’s place and Prabhakaran had left for school, Chitra allegedly poisoned her daughter and later consumed it herself.

The death came to light when Sivaji returned from his friend’s place and saw his wife and daughter unconscious. He immediately raised an alarm, following which neighbours rushed the mother-daughter duo to the Omalur Government Hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival.

The Omalur police registered a case and were investigating.
