Express News Service

MADURAI: Standing motionless for a few minutes can be a tiring task for many but not for Akshinthala Seshu Babu (44), who has been setting records for standing still for hours together to propagate the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi.  In an attempt to break his record of standing motionless for 35 hours in the posture of Mahatma Gandhi, Seshu Babu started his stint on Monday as part of the Republic Day celebration at the S Vellaichamy Nadar College.

“Seeing his previous attempts to stand motionless in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2007, his name was registered in the Limca Book of records for standing motionless as Mahatma Gandhi for 35 hours,” said Sermapandiyan, treasurer of the college.

“We invited him to our institution to try and break his previous records, which would motivate youth and help them learn about the philosophies of Mahatma Gandhi,” he added.

“My journey is to perpetuate the teachings of Gandhiji and his philosophy by doing something which would be an example of tolerance and non-violence. Though it is tough to stand still for hours together, regular exercise and Yoga keep me fit for such challenges,” said Seshu Babu, who was dressed like Gandhi.

“Anything that has not been done before by any individual is a record and Seshu Babu who is working in a private company in New Delhi, has stood still for several hours on various occasions from the past two decades,” said Barath Raj , adjudicator, India Book of Records.
