COIMBATORE: There were anxious moments at the Velliangiri Goshala in Narasipuram, near here, on Sunday as a group of cattle traders took possession of cows that animal rights activists had seized from them a few months ago.
Police at the scene said the activists had taken 23 cows from them near Salem. The animals were taken to the goshala. On the owners approaching the High Court, it ordered that the animals be returned to them.
The goshala had allegedly refused to return the animals on Saturday. On Sunday morning, members of the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi, VCK, Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam, Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam and District Beef Sellers’ Association staged a demonstration in Narasipuram demanding the release of the animals.
Following police intervention, 17 animals were returned to the owners, who said the goshala authorities had refused to hand over the other animals, saying that they had already died.
