A 33-year-old call taxi driver in the city committed suicide on Thursday as he faced huge loss after purchasing a defective car, for which the company refused to take up the responsibility.

COIMBATORE: A 33-year-old call taxi driver in the city committed suicide on Thursday as he faced huge loss after purchasing a defective car, for which the company refused to take up the responsibility.

The deceased was identified as V Thiyagarajan (33), a call taxi driver in the city. In 2014 he purchased a car in a private showroom in the city by availing a loan amount of `6 lakh from a private financier in Vellalore.

Running the vehicle for 1,000 kms, he found that the engine had defects. The car company refused to take up the responsibility for it. Thiyagarajan faced huge loss. He was unable to repay the loan. He lodged a case in the consumer court in 2015.

As he got frustrated, last week he sent his wife and sons to his mother-in-law’s house. On Thursday he committed suicide at his sister’s place. Before committing suicide he had written a letter in this regard. Ramanathapuram police filed a case. Ramanathapuram police inspector O Sekar Singh said, “As of now we have filed a suicide case and after discussing with senior officers it may be converted to abetment of suicide case based on the investigation.”
