Women outnumber men in 189 Assembly constituencies

CHENNAI: The number of women voters outnumbered men in a whopping 189 constituencies though the difference is ranging from a thousand to a few hundreds.  In May last year, women were above men in 141 constituencies. Besides, district-wise data reveals that women voters are less only in four districts – Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem.  

The draft released for summary revision of electoral rolls for the current year on Tuesday said that the total number of women voters in Tamil Nadu crossed the mark of three crore while men are yet to.  
Since 2014, the women voters started going up and in every revision of rolls, their number is going up.  As of now, there are 6,13,776 women voters above the men. Another significant aspect is that the number of young voters in the age group of 18-29 stands at 1.27 crore.  

The special summary revision will be done with January 1, 2018 as the qualifying date.
All those who attain the age of 18 on this date are eligible to enroll as a voter.  According to the draft electoral rolls, the total number of voters stood at 5,95,88,002:  Women voters 3,00,98,268 and men 2,94,84,492.  There are 5,242 transgender voters in the State.  

Of the 32 districts, women voters are above men in all Assembly constituencies in 16 districts - Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Namakkal, Erode, The Nilgiris, Dindigul, Karur, Tiruchi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Sivaganga, Theni, Virudhunagar, Tuticorin and Tirunelveli.
In all, of the 234 Assembly constituencies, women voters topped in 189 constituencies. In 45 other constituencies through the State, their numbers were slightly less.

During the current revision, apart from enrolling new voters, the focus would also be aon deletion of the dead and shifted voters from the rolls, said Chief Electoral Officer Rajesh Lakhoni. Special campaigns would be conducted on October 8 and 22 (both Sundays) at the designated locations, generally the polling stations.

For inclusion, proof of address and age should be submitted along with the Form. Copy of ration card, bank or post office identification books, driving licences, passport, or latest gas or phone bill, Aadhaar letter, etc. may be submitted as proof of residence. Copy of birth certificate or school leaving certificate may be submitted as proof of age.   Proof of age has to be submitted compulsory for applicants below 25 years of age.  Online filing can be done by visiting the website www.nvsp.in.
