CHENNAI: Just when Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and the entire council of ministers were observing a day’s fast over the Cauvery issue, Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Tuesday met PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh at their offices in Parliament and held detailed discussions with them.The Governor’s meeting with the Prime Minister lasted 30 minutes.

 The meetings assumed significance as they came in the backdrop of increasing protests by political parties, farmers associations and other outfits over the Cauvery issue. His visit to Delhi follows his meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan, Home Secretary Niranjan Mardi and other officials two days ago.  

There was no official release from the Raj Bhavan on the Governor’s meetings in Delhi. He is believed to have briefed the Prime Minister and Home Minister on the prevailing law and order situation in Tamil Nadu, protests regarding Sterlite and neutrino issues. While the opposition DMK has called for a bandh on April 5, one of the traders' bodies, Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peravai, has asked its members to shut down on April 11. Apart from these, farmers’ outfits are also staging road and rail rokos across the State.
