CHENNAI: Makkal Needhi Maiam released its political anthem album titled ‘Ithu Nammavar Padai’ in the city on Monday. The lyrics for the six songs in the album are penned down by Bigg Boss fame and core party member Snehan.

While most songs in the album have a strong folk influence with loud ‘urumi melams’ and nadhaswarams, music director Tajnoor has also used EDM beats and characteristic music signatures of 90s film music in a few songs.

This is starkly different from the mobilisation and campaign songs of the Dravidian parties where lyrics dominate and have minimal musical effects. Lyrics like ‘Tamil Nadu thalai yeluthu maara poguthu, Tharamana Aachiyai Paaka poguthu” and politically charged lyrics such as ‘Natu nada seri illa.. anju varshum naatu adagu vekkuromae da’ received a thunderous applause.

Speaking at the event, Kamal Haasan said Snehan had aptly described what his feelings about the way things were in the State and hinted that Snehan had understood him during the last year’s edition of Bigg Boss itself. “These songs are meant for the people and for inspiring the people, but I want to hear from them. It is their anger that inspires me,” Kamal said.

Party accepts first donation

After being recognised by the Election Commission, the Makkal Needhi Maiam got its first donation of `1 lakh from workers of two industries in Puducherry. “We will openly show the money we receive from donors. Not bury it,” said Kamal on receiving the donation. The party declared that all donations that came in before its recognition had been returned to donors.
