CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu state board students registered a pass percentage of 91.39 and 90.93 in the Class 10 and Class 11 public examination results, respectively, declared by the directorate of government examinations (DGE) on Friday. The pass percentage for both classes was 90.07 last year.
While Class 10 pass percentage improved slightly compared to last year, it was still lower compared to pre-Covid levels. About 95.17% students had cleared the exam in 2019. A total of 9,14,320 students, 4,55,017 girls and 4,59,303 boys, wrote Class 10 exam held from April 6 to April 20 this year. Of this, 8,35,614 students had cleared the public exam.
While 94.66% girls had cleared the exam, pass percentage of boys was lower by 6.5%. Last year, the difference between girls and boys’ pass percentage was 8.55%. According to DGE data, 3,718 schools had registered 100% pass and 1,026 of them were government schools. The pass percentage of government schools was 87.45, government-aided schools 92.24, and private schools 97.38. Perambalur district stood first in pass percentage with 97.67 followed by Sivaganga at 97.53. Sivaganga topped the list with 96.38% among government schools followed by Perambalur (96.31%).
While 98.93% students had cleared English, the number was around 95% for other subjects including language, Maths, Science and Social Science. Several students scored centum in Maths (3,649) followed by Science (3,584), Social Science (320) and English (89). There were no centums in the language paper.
Speaking to reporters, school education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said around 23,000 students didn’t appear for Class 10 exam. “School education department officials will track down absentees and make them write Class 10 exam similar to Class 12 exam absentees. Regardless of marks, parents should continue to support their children,” he said.
Tiruppur, Erode secure top spots
In Class 11, the pass percentage of government schools was 84.97, government-aided schools 93.20, and private schools 97.69. Tiruppur district topped the list with 96.38% students clearing the exam followed by Erode (96.18%). Tiruppur was in 11th place last year with 92.17% pass.
Continuing with their good performance in Class 10 and Class 11 exam, tribal welfare schools registered a pass percentage of 86.12 and 90.69. While the pass percentage was up 7.7% from previous year’s 78.37% in Class 10, their performance was also better than government schools in Class 11.
