COIMBATORE: A woman police inspector riding pillion with her son on a two-wheeler died on the spot after she fell on the road and came under the wheels of a van while her son tried to avoid a damaged road patch in Coimbatore on Friday morning. The Kamarajar Road at Singanallur, where the accident took place, has been in poor shape after it was dug up for the city corporation’s 24/7 drinking water project six months ago.

The deceased R Banumathi (52), an inspector of All-Women Police Station (AWPS) in the Coimbatore South Range, was a native of Virudhunagar district. She had been residing with her son and daughter at Barathipuram at Singanallur in Coimbatore.

Police said the inspector’s son attempted to overtake a goods van loaded with rice bags from the left on Kamarajar Road near the two-wheeler parking area at Singanallur stand. However, he lost control while trying to avoid a collision with another two-wheeler.

While trying to avoid riding into an uneven portion, her son lost control of the two-wheeler and both fell on the road parallel to the moving van. Banumathi came under the rear-wheel of the van. Though she was taken to the Government Medical College and ESI Hospital, she died due to excessive blood loss, said police.

Following her death, concern over the bad shape of the Kamarajar Road sounds louder than before. Large sections have deep cuts and uneven surfaces that narrow the carriageway, forcing vehicles to face frequent accidents.
