CHENNAI: A 20-year-old youth was arrested in connection with the murder of a GCC conservancy worker in Thiruverkadu two days ago. A senior police officer told TNIE the youth was picked up by a patrol police team after he was found acting suspiciously near Thiruverkadu late on Thursday night. During questioning on Friday, he allegedly confessed to the murder, the police said, adding a search is on to nab the prime suspect.

The youth, along with his friend, had allegedly killed Hemavathi (55), of Thiruverkadu. He smothered her with a pillow at her house on Wednesday and stole her jewellery. Police said Hemavathi had been living alone for the past 20 years after her husband’s death. Following the youth’s confession, a police team reached her house on Friday and noticed foul smell emanating from the house. On entering the house, they found her decomposed body with a pillow placed over her face.

“Since the woman was living alone, we are yet to ascertain the exact value of the missing jewellery. The woman’s son too is not aware of the jewels at home. Her relatives are on the way to Chennai from Bengaluru,” a police officer told TNIE.
