MADURAI: Amid protests by the TVK’s ally CPM demanding removal of Chief Secretary Dr M Sai Kumar from the post for allegedly ordering the release of circular that instructed officials to monitor students taking part in protests organised by Left parties and Cockroach Janta Party, Law Minister CTR Nirmal Kumar said Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay would take a decision on the issue.

Speaking to reporters in Madurai, Nirmal Kumar said the government had no role in the recent circular. “Higher education is still under the control of the Governor. The government is trying its best to bring higher education under state control. The government is taking all measures to resolve the issues, starting from filling vacancies of vice-chancellor posts.”

On the Left party’s other demand of action against former tahsildar who allegedly ordered collection of details of Left members in his jurisdiction, the minister said the official had acted on his own. “Even the collector was unaware that such a circular would be issued. The government has no motive by issuing such a circular.”

On the preparation for the consecration at Meenakshi temple, he said a review meeting was held and the arrangement plan will be released in a week. The process of checking the stability of nearby buildings is under way. Up to 10,000 people would be allowed to witness the event from nearby gopuram, he said.
