CHENNAI: The state government on Monday announced a series of infrastructure and civic projects under the Municipal Administration and Water Supply department, covering water supply, solid waste management, underground sewerage system network, and others, across all local bodies.
Speaking in the Assembly, Minister A Rajmohan said detailed project reports would be prepared under the Chief Minister’s Integrated Urban Development Mission at an estimated Rs 25 crore across all corporations, municipalities, and town panchayats, focusing on drinking water, sewerage, solid waste management, roads, urban greening and restoration of water bodies.
Among the key announcements, 22 sewage treatment plants run by the Metro Water will be upgraded to produce compressed biogas.
Integrated drinking water schemes were announced for 286 roadside settlements in Kanyakumari district and for Srivilliputhur municipality in Virudhunagar district and two municipalities and seven town panchayats in Tenkasi.
In Tambaram Corporation, sewerage reconstruction in Pallavaram and Chrompet zones and a new UGD project will be established in Thiruneermalai at a total cost of Rs 254 crore.
Feasibility studies for city-wide underground sewerage in Coimbatore, Sivakasi and Tiruchendur will be conducted.
During the debate, DMK MLA KN Nehru urged the state government to increase the number of wards in urban local bodies ahead of the upcoming local body elections.
