HYDERABAD: Telangana has no objection to the construction of Polavaram project or according to national status to the project, but expressed concerns over the submergence of land and displacement of people of Telangana.

As the Supreme Court wanted AP, Telangana, Odisha and Chhattisgarh governments to file the counters in the petition filed by Odisha government challenging the Central government’s decision in according national project status to Polavaram project being constructed by AP government on Godavari river, the Telangana prepared the affidavit.

“The Supreme Court gave us time till Wednesday. The state’s senior advocate CS Vaidyanathan is likely to file the affidavit on Monday. The court will take up hearing on Thursday,” the sources in irrigation department told Express.

Telangana was worried over submergence of its villages under Polavaram project. As per the initial estimates, the flood discharge was just 35 lakh cusecs from Polavaram. But, now the estimated flood discharge is around 50 lakh cusecs.

If the flood discharge is 35 lakh, the villages to be submerged in Telangana under Polavaram will be around 100. With the latest discharge of 50 lakh cusecs proposed by Polavaram authority, the number of displaced villages in Telangana will increase up to 270.

“We will ask the Supreme Court to protect the submergence areas of Telangana. There should not large displacement in Telangana,” an official said.
