NEW DELHI:The culture ministry is planning an art registry that will have a comprehensive database of all forms of arts and artists in the country. “The art registry will bring into limelight all those art forms and artistes that have been struggling to survive in the modern times,” said the official.

The government will be able to implement better schemes and programmes for the benefit of Indian art and artistes once the Art Registry is in place, the official added. “Till now, we had been mostly firing in the dark as the ministry had no accurate data on country’s art scenario. Some things worked, some did not. Now implementation of schemes would see a definite improvement.’’

The art registry will be useful for artistes and producers of art works as it helps to connect both. Asked whether the current political scenario, where many artistes have been returning awards, has got anything to do with the headcount of artistes, the official said, “We have always felt the need for such a registry and similar proposals had been doing rounds for ages. It never materialised. Maybe, now is the right time.”
