NEW DELHI: Following complaints of irregularity in payment to contractual workers in state government offices, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has ordered to deduct 10 per cent of basic salary of the department heads who fail to release wages on time.

Noting that it was a matter of “concern that delay is occurring every month in releasing wages to the workers”, the CM has reprimanded Chief Secretary K K Sharma over the issue and directed him to make officers accountable for non-payment of salaries.

Acting on the order, Sharma has asked all department heads to ensure timely payment of salary to contractual staff “failing which will invite a deduction of pay up to 10 per cent of their basic salary for that month,” Sharma said in a meeting with officials.

While noting a large number of workers were not paid for over months despite the fund being released by the government, Sharma said it shall be the responsibility of each department head and secretary to ensure that all contract employees, whether employed directly by the government or working with a contractor whose services have been hired, are paid latest by the 15th of every month.

He further stated the officers would certify that all contract employees working under them have been paid and a report must be submitted to the Chief Minister by 22nd of every month.

He also said that if a contractor or an outsourced agency fails to make payment to the staff, their contract should be immediately annulled.
