NEW DELHI: Wary about their preaching, many Muslim groups want ban on Wahhabi organisations in the country, a Delhi Police report has claimed. Wahhabism— a branch of Islam—is growing its presence, especially in states like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan, and the group is under the scanner of the security agencies.
Last week, a special branch of Delhi Police submitted a report titled ‘Sufi-Sunnis persist with criticism of Wahhabism’ to Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar Verma. The Sunday Standard has accessed the details of the report that says that a few Muslim groups, like, the All India Tanzeem Ulama-e-Islam have claimed that Wahhabi elements are radicalising people and receiving ‘patro-dollars’ from outfits based in Saudi Arabia and Qatar for it.
The reports states, “Leaders of All India Tanzeem Ulama-e-Islam, an organisation of Bareilvi-Sunni Muslim, at a conference in Jaipur on March 4 underlined the need for spread of Sufi thoughts for countering radicalisation.”
The report further states moderate Muslims groups are openly criticising the Wahhabi organisations. The report says leaders of Tamil Nadu-based Ahle Sunnat-Wal-Jamaath Federation (ASWJF) has claimed that Wahhabi elements have no ideological moorings in Islam. They are fomenting communal disharmony among the people of different sects.
The ASWJF have urged the Central government to ban such outfits. It has also demanded removal of all Wahhabi elements from Waqf Boards. The organisation leaders claimed that a large number of outfits, banned so far by Central government, belongs to Wahhabi school of thought,” the report stated.
