VIJAYAWADA: Sedentary lifestyle followed by physical stress may lead to hair loss and baldness. With this scenario, majority of people spend sleepless nights and prepare themselves to spend thousands of rupees for undergoing hair transplantation therapy.
According to dermatologists, the most common cause of hair loss in adult male or female pattern baldness is genetic. However, a combination of genetics and hormones can start this sort of hair loss in your mid-teen years.
Heredity also affects the age at which you begin to lose hair, the rate of hair loss and the extent of baldness. Pattern baldness is most common in men and can begin as early as puberty. This type of hair loss may involve both hair thinning and miniaturisation (hair becomes soft, fine and short).
“We conduct a range of enquiries on those who come complaining of hair fall. It could be due to various reasons such as tonsillitis, stress or dental caries. The most common cause of hair loss is stress and tension while anaemia and thyroid problems are the major causes for hair loss among women,” says G Sivaji, dermatologist.
Now a days, many people visit hospitals seeking remedy for hair loss. Many of them are young, he says, attributing hair loss to the changing lifestyle.
“The work pattern and stress, working late nights or doing only night shifts have meant that the circadian rhythm is altered, increasing chances of hair loss,” he added.
“Though the number of people seeking treatment has increased, dermatologists are unable to help all of them because for many of the patients, the condition is inherited. They will be counselled and advised to accept the genetic baggage,” Dr S Praveena says.
“Youngsters have the money and want to go for transplantation or hair fixing. But we advise them against it. Some amount of hair loss is a normal, physiological process. A person normally loses about 80 to 100 strands a day. Only when it is over 125 or 130, it requires attention,” Praveena explains.
