Mexican musician and composer Jonathan Meléndez, 38, a keyboardist for indie rock band Camilo Séptimo, was killed along with his pregnant wife, young daughter and nanny in a multiple homicide at the family’s penthouse outside Mexico City, multiple reports quoting authorities said.
The killings occurred Tuesday evening, September 1, in the affluent municipality of Atizapán de Zaragoza in the State of Mexico. Neighbors reported hearing shouts and gunshots, and police discovered the bodies shortly before midnight.
Meléndez’s wife, Ana Paola, 35, was about four months pregnant, while their 3-year-old daughter was among the victims. The family’s nanny and domestic worker, 21-year-old Aleida Romero Victorio, was also killed. Authorities said the victims had been bound with duct tape. Three, including the toddler, suffered close-range gunshot wounds to the head, while another victim was shot in the back.
The family’s dog was also found dead with its paws tied. The couple’s 6-year-old son was discovered unharmed at the scene.
Authorities believe the killings took place between approximately 5:30 p.m. and 7:40 p.m.
Two men were arrested Wednesday in a joint operation involving federal, Mexico City and State of Mexico authorities. Prosecutors identified Diego Sebastián “N,” an acquaintance of Meléndez, as the primary suspect. A second man, Gerardo “N,” was also arrested and is being investigated for alleged involvement.
Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch said one suspect allegedly used a personal relationship with the family to gain entry to the penthouse. The motive remains under investigation.
Camilo Séptimo paid tribute to Meléndez, saying he would be remembered with “immense love and gratitude” for his music, light and friendship.
