THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Bringing the difference of opinion among the UDF members to the fore, the proposal of the selection committee for the appointment of Controller of Examination of Kerala University was voted out at the university Syndicate meeting held here on Wednesday.
The Kerala Congress (M) member, Muslim League member, representative of the Higher Education Council in the Syndicate and the Collegiate Education representative voted with the Left members and rejected the proposal naming Dr G Madhukumar for the post.
The three-member selection committee chaired by Vice-Chancellor A Jayakrishnan had placed the proposal for the approval of the Syndicate. With a section of the UDF members voting along with the Left members the proposal was voted out for 10 against 8 votes while three members, including the VC, abstained from voting.
According to the Left members, the name of Madhukumar was rejected by citing age and experience as barricades. That he lacked the stipulated five-year administrative experience was cited by them. However, sources said that the Muslim League and the Left were in favour of nominating another person associated with pro-Congress organisation, who had allegedly voted in favour of the Left during the Syndicate elections.
The Syndicate meeting also voted out the Senate’s decision to cancel the appointments of the Standing Counsel and Legal Advisor to Kerala University. The Syndicate also expressed its displeasure over the remarks made by CEE B S Maoji that a mafia was active in the university.
The Syndicate decided to recommend Senate to confer honorary doctorates on three personalities - C N R Rao, Jayanth Vishnu Narlikar and Cris Gopalakrishnan. It alos approved the draft budget which estimated Rs 236 crore for 2012-13.
