The CPI issued a statement welcoming the verdict by the Supreme Court and reiterated its demand to scrap the law. It claimed that the party's consistent position on this stood vindicated.
"It will do a UP (Uttar Pradesh) in Bihar," CPIML (Liberation) General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya predicted, referring to the way Bahujan Samaj Party and Congress were split in the late 1990s.
