VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh Medical Council (APMC) is likely to revoke the licence of professor VAA Lakshmi, who is accused of harassing PG medical student Sandhya Rani and driving her to suicide. The APMC has already decided to suspend professor Lakshmi’s husband, Dr G Vijaya Saradhi, VC of the council following the state’s directive.

The couple have been on the run ever since the suicide of Sandhya. Speaking to Express, APMC chairman Dr Yalamanchili Raja Rao said, “Dr Vijaya Saradhi would be suspended from the post of vice-chairman of the council. As he is absconding along with his wife Lakshmi, the medical council is likely to serve a notice on him soon after he resurfaces. We will also initiate action against Lakshmi and suspend her medical licence, if she is found guilty.” He pointed out that the professor has already been suspended by the government.

Medical students and the nursing staff of the Guntur Government General Hospital have been demanding Dr Lakshmi’s immediate arrest and have deposed against her before a high-powered committee constituted by the government.
As new details are emerging of Dr Lakshmi’s alleged high-handedness, political interference and consequent police inaction too have been flying thick and fast. On Saturday, the police and health minister K Srinivas had clarified that there was no question of shielding the professor and promised to bring her to book soon. The committee has found the professor prima facie guilty and a full-fledged probe by the RDO is set to begin shortly.
