BENGALURU: For about four years, the only major road connecting Billapura, a town beside Bengaluru, and Kallahalli, remained in a state of disrepair and disregard. Stretching around 1.5 km, it was a nightmare for two-wheelers, and commuting was a risk. Much to the relief of the locals, Tuesday marked the inauguration of the renovated stretch.

The project that took 37 days to complete, was requested by the Billapura grama panchayat, and Exide Industries Limited obliged as part of the latter’s corporate social responsibility.

The 1.5 km-long stretch road was renovated with a thickness of 300 mm, which is expected to improve connectivity and safety for more than 1,000 villagers who use the route everyday. Besides improving connectivity to schools and healthcare centres, local businesses are expected now to be able to transport goods with greater ease.

Suresh Babu, the president of Billapura grama panchayat said, “The road from Billapura to Kallahalli was so damaged that even bicycles and two-wheelers could not pass through. But today, with Exide’s help, a tar road is constructed. We are truly grateful for their support.”

Chief operations manager at Exide Industries Limited Krishna Kant Singh said, “Infrastructure development plays a critical role in improving quality of life, and this project is a step towards safer, more connected rural communities.”
