‘Be human at heart’

Venkadesan S

Spiritual belief

I’m deeply into spirituality. Born in a Christian family, I start everything with a prayer and keep new things for prayers before using them. Though I am Protestant, I don’t restrict myself to churches of a particular denomination. On special occasions like birthdays of family members and anniversaries, I visit as many churches as possible. My family regularly visits St George’s Cathedral and attends Sunday masses. But we don’t practise baseless religious customs.

Understanding of god

As a family, we don’t consider god as someone far from us, but make him a friend. I don’t go to god only when some good or bad things happen. I would like to share every little thing with him, because he is always with me. And I have understood the strength of prayer. I was born after eight years of prayers by my parents. I prayed for two years before I was blessed with a child. There is someone above us, who decides about giving a new life.

Spiritual practice

I think being religious without being humane doesn’t make sense. We should help needy people — be it our friends or relatives — at least those in our vicinity. That’s what every religion preaches. The prayers that you do without being  human at heart won’t be answered.

Favourite churches

St Antony’s Church in Parry’s Corner and Velankanni are some of my favourite churches. I want to visit churches in Rome and the Vatican City. I have seen them only on TV and in movies and hope my wish comes true soon.
