CHENNAI: Hundreds of students of a private university in Kancheepuram marched to the Collector’s office on Wednesday morning, seeking action against an electrician who was caught filming a girl student bathing in the hostel bathroom.
The complaint was forwarded to the local police, who detained the person and booked him.
Police said Raja aka Ravi (37), the electrician and a resident of Mettu Theru in Enathur, had come to Ghatikhastanam Hostel for Women on the varsity campus to fix a faulty geyser. While on the job, he allegedly filmed the student bathing. Another student, who saw the electrician videographing, raised an alarm, but Raja tucked his mobile and claimed innocence.
As the news spread across the campus, students swarmed the hostel and caught the electrician. They took away his mobile phone, in which there were several videos of girl students taking bath. A warden who was at present at the scene alerted the other wardens. One of them apparently convinced the girl that handing over the memory card to the authorities would lead to the circulation of the video clip. So, the warden destroyed the card.
This angered a section of the students, who went on the rampage on the campus destroying furniture and windows, seeking the arrest of the electrician and alleging lack of security in the hostels. They claimed that Raja had about 25 such video clips.
“The hostel’s common toilets and bathrooms did not have a proper roof. The student did not notice the electrician while he was filming her,” said a student, who requested anonymity.
Also, the students alleged there was no action either from the management or from the police, citing lack of evidence.
