Remembering Saraswathy, a Pioneer in Education

CHENNAI: On the second death anniversary of the K Saraswathi, the founder of Saraswathi Vidhyalaya, the school remembered her contribution to education and society in a fitting manner. The school organised a programme at Vishranthi, a home for senior citizens.

The event saw singer Anuradha Sriram and Dr Sriram Parasuram as chief guests. Anuradha sang her heart out and the elderly with classical and popular numbers.

K Saraswathi was a pioneer in education. She started with a very ordinary background — a village, 15 kilometres from Kancheepuram. In 1956, Saraswathi Vidyalaya was born. Saraswathi facilitated the education of many children, who did not have access to education, patronised arts and contributed to the welfare of women and children.

Leaders and statesmen such as K Kamaraj, M Bhaktavatsalam, C Subramaniam, T T Krishnamachari, R Venkatraman, Kakkan and many others have visited the institution at various times.

The school produced a State Rank in the Public Exam in its first year itself.

Rtn V G P Ravidas, president, Rotary Club of Madras East, and Rtn Janaka Pushpanathan, secretary, Rotary Club of Madras East, spoke on the occasion. They congratulated the principal K S Natarajan for utilising the occasion to contribute to Vishranthi, to Rotary Club of Madras East and to the projects undertaken by Aanmajothi, the Cultural Wing of Saraswathi Vidyalaya, to promote Music and Dance in Corporation and Government schools.

The event was an initiative by Aanmajothi — the cultural wing of the school. Senior musicians fromSudha Raghunathan, Nithyasree Mahadevan, Bombay Jaysahree to the maestro Shri TM Krishna, Rajkumar Bharathi and many more have supported the club in a variety of ways.
