Actor Nasser Gets Honorary Doctorate

CHENNAI:  More than 1,800 students including 31 PhD scholars were conferred degrees on the sixth convocation of Vels University in Pallavaram on Saturday. The university also conferred an honorary doctorate (honoris causa) on  four prolific individuals in the society including Nasser, actor and president of the South Indian Film Artistes’ Association. The others included S Sivakumar, Professor at Indian Law Institute, New Delhi, M Kiran Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of Lalitha Jewellery Mart Private Limited and Dr Shivakumar Palanisamy, gastroenterologist and laparoscopic surgeon at Kumaran Multi- Specialty Hospital and Research Institute, Chennai.

Former Supreme Court judge and chairman of the Law Commission of India Justice B S Chauhan, in his address, stressed the difference between education and literacy. “Education is very different from literacy and it is a real challenge to produce quality education. Higher education is the key to producing strong knowledgeable future for our nation,” Justice Chauhan said.
