4 dead, 77,000 hectares submerged due to cyclone Nilam

After bringing cheers to farmers initially, the cyclone Nilam caused damage to some extent in the state. The incessant rains in the last two days led to the death of four persons and submerged around 77,000 hectares of paddy.

Loss of the standing crop can be estimated only after water recedes from fields.

One person each in East Godavari, Prakasam, Nellore and Anantapur districts passed away due to rains. A fisherman, Lokanathan, belonging to Odisha went missing in the Visakhapatnam sea. A search operation is underway to locate him.

Beside loss of lives, eight tanks - two in Nellore and six Prakasam - were breached and eight other tanks developed cracks in Chittoor district.

After a review with the officials at Secretariat here on Friday, revenue minister N Raghuveera Reddy said that the district collectors would provide ex-gratia to the kin of deceased. Compensation would also be paid to those who lost cattle, he said.

Around 13 relief camps have been arranged in Ongole for 4,824 people living in the city and its surrounding areas. The Indian Meteorological Department said that heavy rains may continue hours in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Warangal and Khammam districts in the next 24 hours. They predicted that the rains would completely stop in the rest of the day by Friday night.
