Officials Seek More Vote Counting Tables, Observers

If the Election Commission sticks to its guidelines on providing limited counting tables, the election results

S Bachan Jeet Singh

If the Election Commission sticks to its guidelines on providing limited counting tables, the election results for two parliamentary and 15 Assembly constituencies in Hyderabad district would be delayed. Worried over this, the Hyderabad district election officer and GHMC commissioner Somesh Kumar on Sunday dashed off a letter to the chief electoral officer Bhanwar Lal to increase the number of tables to 12-15. The counting of votes for the general polls will be taken up on May 16 at 8 am. The EC has allowed seven tables each for the Assembly and Lok Sabha polls. GHMC officials feel that if the EC goes ahead with providing only seven counting tables, counting would take around 12 hours. The existing 7+7 counting tables will not be sufficient as the polling stations in the Assembly constituencies are anywhere between 200-275 and there will be 30-40 counting rounds and process would take nearly 12 hours. The polling stations in the 15 Assembly constituencies are as follows. Musheerabad (236), Malakpet (216), Amberpet (223), Khairatabad (228), Jubilee Hills (271), Sanatnagar (189), Nampally (247), Karwan (254), Goshamahal (246), Chandrayangutta (224), Charminar (179), Yakuthpura (243), Bahadarpura (205), Secunderabad (209) and Secunderabad Cantonment (216). The election officer has also asked the EC to increase the number of observers from the existing six to 15. The observers have to sign the counting report after every round. The counting centres for 15 assembly constituencies are: Musheerabad (LB Indoor Stadium, Basheerbagh), Amberpet (Raja Bahadur Venkat Rama Reddy Women’s College, Narayanguda), Khairatabad (Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy Indoor Stadium, Yousufguda), Sanatnagar (University College of Commerce and Business Management, OU Campus). Jubilee Hills (Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy Indoor Stadium, Yousufguda), Nampally (Boxing Hall, LB Stadium), Secunderabad (Class Room Complex in Distance Education, adjacent to Cycle Veldrome at Osmania University Campus), Malakpet (Municipal Indoor Stadium, Amberpet), Karwan (MAM Government Model Junior College for Girls, Nampally), Goshamahal (Ghulam Ahmed College of Education, Sultan Uloom Education Society, Road No.3, Banjara Hills). Charminar (Kamala Nehru Polytechnic College for Women, Nampally), Chandrayangutta (Library Hall, Nizam College Building,) Yakutpura (Government Polytechnic College, Masab Tank), Bahadurpura (Sanethika Vidya Bhavan, Adjacent to Government Polytechnic College, Masab Tank).
