Fight Against Drugs

Ashvitha Kontham

The general assembly of United Nations had declared June 26 as International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in 1987 to combat drug abuse and achieve an international society free of drug abuse.

To commemorate the day the NCC and NSS groups of St. Francis College For Women at Begumpet in collaboration with Amrita Foundation Society, organised a talk by Dr Hari Kumar, a city-based cosmetic surgeon, about ills of drug abuse. Dr Kumar said that youngsters are major victims of drug abuse due to peer pressure and high stress levels.

He advised students to incorporate meditation in their dally routine to combat stress. “Deep breathing helps in relaxing the body and mind, breath connects the outer and inner worlds, so by controlling breath one can gain control over the outside world’” he said.

The college also conducted various competitions such as poster making, slogan writing and skits underlying the theme of drug abuse. ‘The Best Me Is Drug Free’, Be A Thinker Not A Drinker’, ‘Few Moments of Ecstasy The Rest Of Misery’, ‘Put It Out Before It Puts You Down’ were some of the interesting slogans on posters.
