HYDERABAD: Municipal Administration minister K T Rama Rao directed officials to make arrangements to replace 4.5 lakh street lights in GHMC with LED bulbs.
At a review meeting held on Light Emitting Diode (LED) here on Tuesday, KTR directed GHMC commissioner B Janardhan Reddy and CDMA director M Dana Kishore to enter into an agreement with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) for fixing the LED bulbs. LED lighting is expected to save up to 50 to 60 per cent of the energy consumption.
At the same time, he also directed Dana Kishore to replace high power consuming street lights in all the urban local bodies except GHMC with power saving LED street lights to conserve power and reduce electricity expenditure. The process of fixing the LED lights in the state should be completed before the coming Sankranthi festival.
The main project will be implemented by EESL investing the entire capital cost and will be paid through savings over seven years.Presently GHMC is incurring a huge expenditure of Rs 214.82 crore annually towards street lights.
As per the EESL report, which will install the LED lights in the GHMC circles, power load of street lights would reduce from 72.13 MW to 31.81 MW, a reduction of 40.32 MW. The annual energy savings would be 176.6 million kwh.
Of the Rs 406.86 crore project cost, EESL annuity will be Rs 108.42 crore, post retrofit energy charges per annum (Rs 104.14 crore), Net savings to GHMC over seven years will be Rs 15.82 crore.
